Avoiding Email Loops
Be very careful if you forward your email to another email service or have a program that picks up your email and forwards it to an account at another provider. If for any reason that message bounces (for example if your mailbox fills up, or if the message is rejected as Spam) then you will create an endless loop whereby the message is delivered here, then sent to the other provider, who sends it back here, who sends it there, etc., etc.

Secure Password Protection
A recent article in the Hamilton Spectator outlined the importance of secure passwords as the threat of hackers continues to grow daily. New password-cracking programs can be used to generate dictionary words in as little as two seconds. These programs can also recognize words that are combined with extra characters and numbers, confirming the need for more secure passwords. We suggest passwords that contain eight or more characters, complete with numbers, upper and lowercase letters in a random order that does not contain a recognizable word, to ensure the utmost protection. To generate a unique password simply click here.

Protect Your Modem From Power Surges
Recent power outages and power spikes have caused some ADSL modems to fail. Its a good idea to protect your modem behind some form of UPS and/or surge protection. For more information and recommendations see http://www.usatoday.com/tech/columnist/2001-07-09-komando.htm.

Redundant Connections
As more and more businesses come to rely on the internet for essential business functions, even brief periods of down time can be very costly. NetAccess is working with its suppliers to ensure optimum system up time, but certain areas of vulnerability remain beyond our control. We are building in further redundant fail-over connections to our facility, and would also encourage clients to look at redundant connections as part of their own IT planning. We are currently looking into some reliable and inexpensive options for fail-over services for our clients, and will be providing more information in our next news letter.
